Acoustic comfort : The acoustics for the ceilings should be good which should enhance the sound that is required, while eliminating or reducing unwanted sound.
Accessibility and service management : A suspended ceiling should allow for concealing the plumbing, the air-conditioning system and electrical wiring. A good ceiling system also enables ease of access to such ducts and wires.

The ability of ceilings to reduce sound is measured by noise reduction coefficient (NRC). NRC implies the absorptive capacity of a particular material. It is the average of the mid-frequency sound absorption coefficients. A NRC of 0.5 means that 50% of the sound is absorbed. The balance 50% sound is reflected.
