Light efficiency : If the ceiling reflects and diffuses light properly, there is less need for artificial lighting, resulting in improved energy efficiency and a better working environment.
Acoustic comfort : The acoustics for the ceilings should be good which should enhance the sound that is required, while eliminating or reducing unwanted sound.
Accessibility and service management : A suspended ceiling should allow for concealing the plumbing, the air-conditioning system and electrical wiring. A good ceiling system also enables ease of access to such ducts and wires.
Other functional parameters : Apart from these parameters, fire safety, moisture resistance, ease in cleaning, load-bearing capacity, installation and environment friendliness are important.

A good ceiling reflects and diffuses light well, which reduces the need for artificial lighting. This results in improved energy efficiency and a better working environment.

The ability of ceilings to reduce sound is measured by noise reduction coefficient (NRC). NRC implies the absorptive capacity of a particular material. It is the average of the mid-frequency sound absorption coefficients. A NRC of 0.5 means that 50% of the sound is absorbed. The balance 50% sound is reflected.

False ceilings create an air gap between the soffit and the false ceiling, thus making a thermal insulation.
They reduce the air volume of a room and, hence the air conditioning load.
Thus, the air-conditioning requirement is reduced, resulting in lower electricity bills.
